Last year Sound Performance Ltd, a leading CD and Vinyl manufacturer in the UK assembled a panel of music industry experts including Tim Burgess (The Charlatans and Phil Barton (Sister Ray Records). They teamed up with Record store Day and Proper to hold a competition to find an unsigned band or artist that would win the chance to have their album manufactured and distributed in the UK, Barbudo were the winners!

Barbudo deliver pop-funk, disco, and MOR electro with polished musicianship and pizzazz from their studio in the south of England. Brothers Ben and Harry Stanworth have taken inspiration from the pioneers of funk, soul and disco, as well as acts such as Steely Dan, Shuggie Otis and The Isley Brothers, to give their contemporary sound a classic and stylish vibe that oozes charm and millennial zeitgeist.
Barbudo’s debut ‘Sunshine’ is an eclectic and infectious mix of funk-pop songs providing instantly engaging tracks deepened by pertinent thought-provoking lyrics. The sound is new but it prompts nostalgia too; the perfect mix of classic and current.

While ‘Digital Nicotine’ comments on phone culture to a ringtone-esque backbeat, the album’s lead track, ‘Sunshine’, laments the glut of misinformation, in our fake-news era, to dry infectious disco. The playful nature of the tracks
is exemplified by the euphoric groove of ‘Realise the Reality’, which toys with the idea of living in a simulation. More familiar themes of love appear in, ‘I Like That’, which takes you on an emotional journey through the awkwardness of a first date, and the vibrant ‘Secret Admirer’.

Written, recorded and self-produced by the Stanworth brothers, the record is brimming with warmth and charm. Each track reminisces late seventies funk, disco and RnB and combined with Sunshine’s contemporary quirks and lyrical themes, takes you on a ride through life as a millenial.

Tracks: Secret Admirer / Float Away / I Like That / Realise The Reality / Sunshine
/ Digital Nicotine / Disco Sucks / Sxc
